[Creative Element] Final Words Series

Leading up to Easter, we did a four week series called “Final Words.” During the series we focused on the seven phrases that Jesus said from the cross as He was dying for the sins of the world. To help keep the phrases in front of people as we moved through them, we made signs for each one and hung them on either side of our screen.

The signs were made from foam board covered with red tissue paper. The black border was made with black paint, and the words were made from letters printed out, cut out, and glued on. They were hung with red yarn using duct tape on the foam board and nails in the wood. We tried fishing line, but it kept slipping out of the duct tape.

The idea came from a picture I had seen of something similar done by another church but with international people pictures hung.

The only down side was the foam board ended up curling some. We think it was because of the way the red paper was attached to the board (watered down glue).

Just Passing ThroughWe began a new series this week that will take us through the book of 1 Peter. Many Christians live today as if the world were our final destination. We pour our life resources and energy into things that will barely last 50 years, let alone eternity. We frequently cave in to the old sinful desires. We sturggle to remain faithful in the midst of great suffering. We’ve lost sight  of the glorious inheritance waiting for us.

God calls us to live as “strangers” in this world, spiritual sojourners that are just passing through. As children of the living God, our focus should be on eternity as we point people to the living Christ who paid it all for us. Our priorities and lifestyle should undergo a radical transformation. Worship as a Sacrifice?

It’s one of those concepts we toss around in relation to worship: the idea of a sacrifice of praise and worship being a sacrifice. But do we really believe that worship involves sacrifice? Do we comprehend what that means? Do we believe it’s true, and if so, do we act and live like it?

I found an article over at ExperiencingWorship.com by a guy named Russell Henderson. I don’t know anything about him, but he wrote a great article about this concept drawing on a story from the life of David as he sought to purchase the threshing floor from Oman in order to offer a sacrifice to make amends for a huge sin David committed.

Some of the things that stood out to me:

  • We know from scripture that worship is sacrifice, but many times we want to curt-tail on someone else’s sacrifice. In other words, we want someone else to do all the work to get to God, and we want to share in the benefits of their labor.
  • We are called to worship just as much (or more) in the bad times as we do in the good times.
  • True worship will take us to a place where God will respond.
  • Take a look at what you are offering to God. Is it someone else’s offering, or is it something that comes from your heart in repentance and surrender?
  • As worshippers we must understand that God wants genuine sacrifice.

It’s an awesome article. I encourage you to go and read all of it here.

Does your worship involve genuine sacrifice? What does that look like in your life?

Final Words Theme Slide

When someone is in their final days, those who are close to the person often lean and listen hard to their final words. As Jesus hung on the cross, the Scriptures record Him saying seven final phrases that those who were gathered near Him listened to and recorded. What do they mean for us today, and why should we still listen to them?

This was the final week of the “Final Words” series, as well as Easter. As we gathered we looked at the final phrases of Jesus from the cross (John 19:30 and Luke 23:46) as He declared that it was DONE. It was a great day together celebrating, remembering, and proclaiming the sufficiency of Christ’s work on the cross and the transforming power of that work. Continue Reading…

Who We Worship

In an age of inclusivity and equality, it is good to be reminded of the supremacy and trueness of God. The fact is that God and _____ (fill in a diety from another religion here) are not the same, even though many will try to say that all are.

Dwayne Moore over at Next Level Worship has a great post talking about the differences between the God of the Bible and Allah. Using the Bible and the Quran to compare and contrast, he clearly shows that the two are not the same, and that only the God of the Bible is worthy of our worship.

Check it out and be encouraged.
