Sunday Setlist: 5/31/09

Just Passing ThroughThe journey through 1 Peter continued this week with a guest speaker. Many Christians live today as if the world were our final destination. We pour our life resources and energy into things that will barely last 50 years, let alone eternity. We frequently cave in to the old sinful desires. We sturggle to remain faithful in the midst of great suffering. We’ve lost sight  of the glorious inheritance waiting for us.

God calls us to live as “strangers” in this world, spiritual sojourners that are just passing through. As children of the living God, our focus should be on eternity as we point people to the living Christ who paid it all for us. Our priorities and lifestyle should undergo a radical transformation.

In 1 Peter, Peter unpacks what this transformed life looks like and how it should interact with this world. In 1 Peter 3:8-22, Peter reminds us of who we are in and through Christ. God desires to live through us to be seen in us. As a Christ-follower, we are to assume the identity of Christ.Service flow (Song links go to AmazonMp3 for $0.99 songs that are DRM free):

It was a great morning. All around, everything just worked together and allowed people to see and be reminded of God together. We started a little different. After reminding people of the Pentecost story, the music team did a sung call to worship. It was an older song called “Show Us Who You Are” that talks about the characteristics of God and then lets us call for God to show us who He is. We invited people to listen and reflect on the words, and then moved into corporate singing.

The songs were great and it really seemed we were singing well together. Following the main group of songs, we moved into the offering and showed another video about what the Christian & Missionary Alliance is doing in Mongolia. Following that, we put the names of the missionaries on the screen, and invited people to join with a few people around them and to pray for one or two of the missionaries. It was really neat, especially since the video ended with one of the missionaries asking us to remember to pray.

For the message, we had one of our elders preach this week. Kirby has been involved with the church and a part of leadership for a while. It was a real treat to have him preach. He did a great job. As the message concluded, we invited people to reflect and pray about assuming the identity of Christ. After that, Kirby shared some practical next steps that people could take.

We then had a trio do a song called “Song of Glory” by Ashmont Hill. It is a great song that talks about our life and our world reflecting the glory of God. The idea that our whole life should be a song of glory that praises God and has a significant impact. We then sang a song together to finish it out.
