If there is one thing that is true of creativity, it is this: it doesn’t just happen.
At least not repeatedly and not on demand.
Creativity that is constant, that is useful, and that is meaningful is something that must constantly be developed and nurtured. If we do not invest in developing our creative muscles, eventually it will not be present when we need it.
Michael Wolff has been involved in creative work for a long time. You may not have heard of him, but he is considered the father of 20th century brand expression and identity.
You would think that, for as long as he’s been doing this, that he would have learned all there is. That he would have an unlimited store of creative ideas.
But, in this 6-minute documentary, he reveals what he does to continue to be effective as a creative.
Take a look.
He’s been around the block, but he offers some great wisdom.
I really like the line at the end where he says that he is “obsessively interested in everything.”
I was also struck by the idea of being careful to not become pigeon-holed in design and that it is important to help people express themselves instead of imposing my idea of good design on them.
What are you interested in these days? How are your muscles of curiosity, appreciation, and imagination?
After watching this, I realize that I could certainly grow in each of these.
