[Video] All Nations Will Sing

Check this video from Northwood Church. It is from a live recording for a worship disc they have recently released. How fitting that Revelation Song be sung with many tribes and tongues.

catch spirit title regularWe’re into our Christmas series for 2009 called “Catch the Christmas Spirit.” This year, we are focusing on helping people remember and capture the true meaning and spirit of this time of year. As soon as Halloween is over, we are thrust into the season of red, green, and sales.

The rush to get the right stuff for the right people is all that many people know and experience at this time of year. But, when we settle for that, we settle for a cheap substitute of what this time of the year is really about.

In Isaiah 9:1-7, God promised an amazing gift for the people. If we can catch the true Christmas spirit, our holiday celebration will not be the same, and neither will we.

one title 1Mathematically, one is a cardinal whole number. In computer programming, one combined with zeroes become a binary code. Relationally, the 1970′s band Three Dog Night wants you to believe that one is the loneliest number. It can also be a very selfish number of we are only looking out for “numero uno.”

Biblically, the number “one” is pregnant with meaning. The Scripture teaches that God is one. One captures the heart of Jesus’ prayer for the church (John 17). The apostle Paul urges believers to guard the unity of the church in Ephesians 4:3. The Spirit’s emphasis on “oneness” inspires Paul to rehearse all the other “ones” that should matter to us: there is only one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

I’ve missed doing this the last few weeks, but we have continued unpacking the concept of “One” laid out in Ephesians 4:4-6. This week we looked at the fact that baptism is more than a religious ritual. The water baptism of a Christian is intended to communicate a strong message both to the one being baptized and to those watching the baptism.

We are unpacking the concept of “One” laid out in Ephesians 4:4-6 over the next weeks. This week we looked at the how there is only one body of Christ. Even in our small town, there are 30 different churches listed in the phone book. Yet the Bible teaches that there is only one true Church, and it is important that we grasp what this means.

[Song Story] Revelation Song

Revelation song - titleDuring the summer, we’ve introduced the song “Revelation Song.” It’s really quickly become a favorite expression of our church. In the past issue of our church newsletter, I included the story behind the song. If you haven’t read it yet, I’ve included it below straight from the author’s (Jennie Lee Riddle) blog. The story is as great as the song. After reading the story, be sure to check out the video below. This was the first video I saw of the song being done, and is still my favorite.

[Creative Element] Entering God’s Throneroom

854278_57121048For my 50th post, I wanted to provide a free creative resource. We used this in our service on July 5, 2009 as we focused on remembering and entering into the holiness of God. The dramatic reading below is for one person to deliver as he/she describes what it might be like to enter the throne room of God because of Jesus and to be in His presence. It’s really effective with songs like Revelation Song, Exalted (Tomlin), Holy, Holy, Holy, and Agnus Dei.

Have some music playing underneath and invite people to close their eyes and imagine what is being read. When we used this, it was very impactful.

Adapt and use as necessary. This was originally told to my wife and her siblings by their mom as they were growing up. Enjoy!

Just Passing ThroughThis was the final week of the series we’ve doing on 1 Peter where we’ve been exploring how many Christians live today as if the world were our final destination. We pour our life resources and energy into things that will barely last 50 years, let alone eternity. We frequently cave in to the old sinful desires. We struggle to remain faithful in the midst of great suffering. We’ve lost sight of the glorious inheritance waiting for us.

God calls us to live as “strangers” in this world, spiritual sojourners that are just passing through. As children of the living God, our focus should be on eternity as we point people to the living Christ who paid it all for us. Our priorities and lifestyle should undergo a radical transformation.

In 1 Peter, Peter unpacks what this transformed life looks like and how it should interact with this world. In 1 Peter 5:5-14, Peter offers parting words to the scattered Christians as a call for them to humble themselves before God so that they might have what they need to resist the enemy and stand firm in the faith. The call for us is to live humbly with God because of who He is and His holiness. Continue Reading…
