Worshiping Together: 10/23/11

This week was my first week at our new church/ministry. You can read more about this new opportunity and our first steps.

The church has been going through the life of David on Sunday mornings. This week, we focused on when Nathan confronted David regarding the sin with Bathsheba as told in 2 Samuel 12. It was a great opportunity to focus on the aspects of confronting sin (only go when God leads and always go when God leads), the true thing that God was upset about (that He had given David everything and would have given more, but David instead chose not to be faithful to God’s charge of shepherding), and confession and repentence.

Note: Yes, I know I’m breaking the routine a little bit this week. Posting may be a little inconsistent over the next few weeks as we move to Alabama. Read more about the place God has provided for us to serve here. Thanks for being patient.

This week, I had the privilege of again leading at CrossPoint Community Church in worship. This will be the last time I lead here as in a few weeks we will be moving to Alabama to begin as Associate Pastor at the Genesis Church Lillian campus. We’re super excited.

At CrossPoint, we’ve been looking at some of the core values of what it means to be part of the Christian & Missionary Alliance. These values aren’t just things that we think should be important or that we like, but ministry priorities that Jesus taught and modeled during His time on earth.

As we focused together on Christ in the service, we were reminded of how operating out of a foundation of the Word of God is critical to success and how it is necessary for every devoted disciple to be mobilized.

Worshiping Together: 9/25/11

This past Sunday, we had the privilege of worshiping with a new group of people.

In recent weeks, the Lord connected Beck and I with the Genesis Church in Lillian, AL. We had the opportunity to lead them this weekend as part of an interviewing (or candidating) weekend.

They have been journeying through the life of David on Sunday mornings. This weekend was focused on 2 Samuel 7 when David wants to build a temple. God tells David that it won’t be him. David has some disappointment about this, but also experiences a promise and blessing in another direction. David responds by affirming his trust in God with worship. The exact thing I’ve personally learned about worship from David. Continue Reading…

Labor Day weekend is one of those Sundays that is often treated poorly in a church. It’s the last Sunday of the summer. The last opportunity to camp, go to the lake, or go on vacation. The last opportunity for ‘fun’ before the reality and busyness of fall sets is.

As a result, it’s easy to see that Sunday as a “throw-away” Sunday. Maybe it’s an opportunity to give a less experienced speaker a chance to preach. Maybe a chance to experiment with a “unique” band arrangement. At the very least, not a Sunday when most creative teams invest extra time and energy.

This past Sunday at CrossPoint, we did exactly that. We invested extra time and energy in building a special worship service. We wanted to give an opportunity for people to experience worship in some significant and different ways than normal. We focused on the character of God and the fact that our worship is because of who He always is. We invited people to experience worship. Continue Reading…

I had the opportunity to lead in worship this past Sunday with the team at CrossPoint Community Church where we’ve been attending while I continue to look for a new ministry position.

We concluded a four-week series called “Straight Talk” where we’ve been looking at what the Bible has to directly say about some big topics. We’ve covered drinking, sex, and gossip. This final week was focused on growing up, or maturity in Christ.

The Scripture focus was 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 as we drew first a contrast between seeking decisions or disciples as the church. We’re called to make disciples. Disciples are continual learners, and there is a difference between an immature disciple/learner and maturing disciples/learners. In the end, it’s about being like Christ.

I had the opportunity this week to again be a part of the worship leading at CrossPoint Community Church. We’ve continued the “Superheroes of the Bible” series with the focus being on Moses. There was a guest speaker this week. He focused on how God gave the law, especially the Ten Commandments, through Moses so that the Israelites could have life. In the other parts of the service, we focused on how life is found in Jesus Christ who fulfilled the law in all seasons.

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these posts, but I had the opportunity to lead worship at the church we’re currently attending while in our transition period. It was great to have the opportunity to do so, although I felt a little nervous walking into the situation as I’m still learning the “uniqueness” of the worship team/ministry here.

Fortunately, all went well. It was great to work with this team and to be a part of the ministry in this way.

We’re doing a summer series called Superheroes of the Bible. It’s taking a look at some different Bible characters and what God did through them because of their faith. One of the characteristics of this congregation is that many are younger in the faith. This series is also to expose people to some stories and characters of the Bible they may not have heard yet. I had the opportunity to lead worship this weekend for the first time since concluding at the church I was previously a part of. We’re in a season of transition, waiting for what God has next for us. You can catch up on our transition in this post.

In the meantime, we’re living in Toledo, and volunteering at a church re-plant lead by a great friend of ours. It’s great to be able to serve with him in this time.

This past Sunday had a focus on one of the core aspects of the denomination we’re part of, the Christian & Missionary Alliance. The focus was on the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20, Acts 1:8) and what it means to be a part of that as a church.
